Welcome to the fifteenth issue of Council E-News, your source for updates on the Council's assessments, corporate activities, its Member Academies, and science in Canada.
President's Message 


The Council looks forward to another busy year in 2014 as we focus on 13 assessments. The continued demand for our work speaks to the need for authoritative, evidence-based assessments that provide a scientific lens through which policy-makers might view today's most pressing questions.
I am pleased that our reports are continuing to resonate and have an impact with various levels of government. Many of our readers will be interested to know that the Province of Ontario recently initiated a process to examine business support programs.

Expert Panels at Work

The Council is gearing up for several report launches this spring and a busy year ahead. In 2014, there will be 13 panels hard at work, with upwards of 7 reports slated for release. The organization has never been so active with panel meetings, research and writing, and report production, and will soon add to its 22 published in-depths reports.


Fellow in Focus

Dr. Carol P. Herbert, FCAHS


In this issue of Council e-News, we speak with Dr. Carol P. Herbert, FCAHS, a Professor of Family Medicine at Western University who also served as Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University. Early in her career, Dr. Herbert was a community family physician and clinical instructor at the REACH community health centre in Vancouver. She was also founding head of the UBC Division of Behavioural Medicine, a co-founder of the UBC Institute of Health Promotion Research, and Royal Canadian Legion Professor and Head of the UBC Department of Family Practice. Dr. Herbert is a member of the Council of Canadian Academies' Board of Governors. Read more.

Dr. Graham Bell


The Council warmly welcomes its newest Board of Governors member, Dr. Graham Bell, FRSC. Dr. Bell is Research Director, James McGill Professor Chair, Department of Biology at McGill University, and President of the Royal Society of Canada. He replaces outgoing member Dr. Marie D'Iorio, FRSC, Executive Director of the National Institute for Nanotechnology. We also wish to thank Dr. D'Iorio for her dedicated service.
